IGP Disu Inaugurates Steering Committee on State Police, Calls for Complementary Security Framework

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, inaugurated a Steering Committee on the Establishment of State Police in Nigeria, describing the assignment as both significant and timely in view of the nation’s security challenges.

According to a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the IGP emphasized that the concept of state police is being carefully examined as part of broader national efforts to improve security governance, bring policing closer to the people, and deepen community participation in crime prevention.

He clarified that state policing is not intended to replace or diminish the Nigeria Police Force but to function as a complementary structure within a coordinated national security framework that strengthens cohesion and institutional effectiveness.

Reaffirming his commitment to intelligence-led, evidence-based, and technology-driven policing, Disu directed senior officers to lead by example, enforce discipline decisively, and uphold the highest ethical and professional standards. He stressed the importance of improved coordination, enhanced intelligence architecture, and investment in modern investigative tools.

The inauguration marked the first official strategic engagement between the new IGP and the senior leadership cadre of the Nigeria Police Force since his assumption of office.

Part of the committee’s mandate includes reviewing existing police models within and outside Nigeria, assessing community security needs and emerging risks, proposing an operational framework for state police structures, addressing recruitment, training, standards, and resource allocation, and developing accountability mechanisms to ensure professionalism and build public trust.
