Fresh violence has erupted in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, leaving scores feared dead after armed militias reportedly went on a rampage across several communities.
Local sources said the attackers stormed villages, killing residents and hurriedly burying victims as fear and chaos spread across the area. The latest bloodshed is believed to be linked to lingering tensions between Bachama and Tchobo-speaking communities, whose clashes have triggered deadly confrontations in recent times.
The crisis had earlier drawn national attention after troops of the Nigerian Army, deployed to maintain peace, allegedly opened fire on unarmed women protesters during previous unrest.
In response to the renewed violence, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the entire Lamurde Local Government Area.
A statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said the measure was necessary due to renewed attacks and the breakdown of law and order in some communities.
“Government views these disturbances as unacceptable and has directed security agencies to enforce the curfew strictly,” the statement read.
The governor warned that anyone found violating the directive would be arrested and prosecuted. The curfew takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice. Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance and restore order in the affected communities.
Residents were urged to obey the curfew and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could help restore peace.
Governor Fintiri stressed that his administration would not tolerate acts of violence and remains committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
