GLOBACOM has stepped up investment in its telecommunications infrastructure with a nationwide network expansion programme aimed at strengthening broadband capacity, increasing coverage and enhancing service quality for millions of subscribers across Nigeria.
The latest upgrades, which the company said have been progressively deployed since late last year, are part of a broader strategy to modernise its network and position it to meet the country’s growing demand for high-speed internet, digital services and data-driven applications.
At the centre of the expansion is the acquisition of additional spectrum resources, a move the operator said has significantly boosted its ability to carry larger volumes of traffic while improving network efficiency. The expanded spectrum is expected to deliver faster internet speeds, improved upload performance, more reliable voice services and smoother video streaming, particularly during periods of heavy network usage.
The company noted that increasing smartphone adoption, the rapid growth of digital financial services, online learning, remote work and video-based content have continued to place greater pressure on mobile networks, making sustained investment in infrastructure essential to maintaining service quality.
To complement the additional spectrum, Globacom disclosed that it has embarked on an aggressive rollout of new LTE infrastructure across the country. Thousands of LTE sites have already been deployed this year, while hundreds more are currently under construction. The company also revealed plans to install more than 1,000 additional sites over the next 12 months to further improve connectivity in urban centres, underserved communities and rural locations.
According to the company, the infrastructure expansion is expected to deepen broadband penetration, reduce coverage gaps and improve both indoor and outdoor network performance across the country.
A company representative described the project as a comprehensive network transformation rather than a routine upgrade, noting that the investments are designed to deliver stronger coverage, higher data speeds and a more consistent user experience nationwide.
Beyond expanding radio access infrastructure, Globacom said that it has also strengthened its fibre transmission backbone along key national routes to support the increasing demand for data services. The enhanced fibre network is expected to improve data transport across the company’s core infrastructure, reducing latency and increasing network resilience.
The operator added that upgrades to its backhaul systems, including the deployment of advanced microwave transmission technology and optimisation of its core network, have further improved traffic management and reduced network congestion in many parts of the country.
According to the company, the combined improvements are expected to deliver more stable internet browsing, clearer voice communication and improved performance for businesses and consumers relying on digital platforms.
As part of its broader operational strategy, Globacom is also investing in more energy-efficient infrastructure through the deployment of hybrid battery-powered systems at several network locations. The initiative is intended to reduce dependence on diesel-powered generators, improve operational efficiency and enhance service availability while supporting more sustainable network operations.
The company said that the transition to hybrid power solutions aligned with global efforts to improve environmental sustainability while maintaining reliable telecommunications services.
A senior company official reiterated Globacom’s commitment to providing affordable telecommunications services despite the significant investments made in network expansion. According to the official, the objective remains to deliver reliable connectivity at competitive prices while expanding access to digital services for individuals, businesses and institutions.
Globacom also stated that subscribers would continue to benefit from its existing portfolio of affordable voice and data plans, loyalty programmes, youth-focused offerings, SME packages and digital entertainment services available through GloTV.
With increased spectrum capacity, expanded LTE coverage, strengthened fibre infrastructure and ongoing network optimisation, Globacom said that the latest phase of investment represents another step towards building a more resilient telecommunications network capable of supporting Nigeria’s evolving digital economy and the growing connectivity needs of consumers and businesses.
