Tinubu to attend Buhari’s first posthumous anniversary

By Lanre Oloyede

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead dignitaries at the first posthumous anniversary of former President Muhammadu Buhari, as family members, political associates, and admirers prepare to celebrate his life and legacy.

The commemorative event is scheduled for July 13 at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Asokoro, Abuja, and will feature interfaith prayers, tributes, and the public presentation of a commemorative book titled “Tributes and Condolences in Honour of Muhammadu Buhari.”

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, disclosed the programme during a press briefing in Abuja, describing President Tinubu as the Special Guest of Honour. He explained that the memorial aims to bring together Buhari’s family, former aides, friends, public officials, and well-wishers to honour the late president’s contributions and pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The tribute book contains condolence messages from heads of state, diplomats, political leaders, and members of the international community, who remembered Buhari for his simplicity, resilience, and integrity. Mustapha noted that selected individuals who worked closely with Buhari would also share personal experiences and reflect on his leadership and enduring legacy.

He emphasised that the programme will consist mainly of interfaith prayers, reflecting Buhari’s values of unity, faith, and national cohesion. He added that the commemorative publication would not be commercialised but distributed free of charge to Nigerians.

Religious leaders from different faiths are expected to lead prayers during the ceremony. Mustapha said no decision had yet been taken on whether the memorial would become an annual event.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with Buhari, Mustapha described him as a mentor and father figure whose humility left a lasting impression. He recalled visiting Buhari in the UK about a month before his death, sharing what turned out to be their final dinner together. “I have lost a leader, a father, a mentor and a guiding force. Whenever I reflect on his life, I am reminded of the frailty and transient nature of life,” he said.
