Interior Minister, Conference of Speakers seek stronger Federal–State collaboration

By Palma Ileye

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with State Legislatures to advance internal security, effective governance and improved service delivery across the country.

Tunji-Ojo made the pledge yesterday while receiving members of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, led by its Chairman and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

He commended the Conference for its proactive approach to nation-building and described State legislatures as key partners in governance, stressing the importance of stronger institutional relationships between the Federal and sub-national governments.

According to him, sustainable reforms in internal security and civic administration can only be achieved through effective synergy between Federal and State institutions.

He assured the delegation that the Ministry would give due consideration to its requests and proposals for collaboration in line with existing policies and national priorities.

Tunji-Ojo also reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to implementing people-centred reforms aimed at enhancing national security, improving border management and strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s internal governance systems.

Earlier, Guwor congratulated the minister on what he described as his reform-driven leadership, saying his performance reflected the confidence reposed in him by President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that the Conference of Speakers, as representatives of State legislatures closest to the grassroots, remained a strategic partner in supporting policies and reforms that directly affect citizens.

Guwor stressed the need to strengthen existing ties between the Conference and the Ministry, particularly in areas that promote national cohesion, reinforce the country’s security architecture and improve public service delivery.

He also affirmed the readiness of State Houses of Assembly to provide the necessary legislative support for the implementation of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The meeting ended with both parties expressing commitment to sustained engagement and strategic cooperation to strengthen governance, enhance internal security and improve service delivery for Nigerians.
