INEC Releases Timetable for 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the Notice of Election and Timetable of Activities for the 2027 General Elections, marking what it described as a “significant milestone” in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Announcing the schedule today, February 13, 2026, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), said the Commission acted in line with constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act 2022, which mandate the publication of election notices not later than 360 days before the polls.

According to the timetable, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027. The detailed schedule has been uploaded to INEC’s official website and circulated to political parties and stakeholders.

Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the Commission remains committed to transparency, credibility, and adherence to the law. He cautioned political parties against violating timelines for primaries, submission of nomination forms, and campaigns, stressing that INEC will enforce compliance.

He also addressed ongoing discussions about amendments to the Electoral Act, noting that while INEC is open to reforms that strengthen the electoral process, it must act within the existing legal framework. “The timely announcement of the election date is a critical step, allowing stakeholders – political parties, civil society organisations, and the electorate – to prepare adequately,” he said.

The INEC Chairman further outlined the commission’s priorities ahead of the polls, including deepening the use of technology to enhance transparency, continuous cleaning of the voters’ register, strengthening collaboration with security agencies, and expanding voter education.

Prof. Amupitan appealed to political parties to conduct peaceful primaries, shun violence, and uphold internal democracy. He also urged candidates, supporters, and the electorate to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the electoral cycle.

“The success of the 2027 General Elections is a collective responsibility. Government institutions, security agencies, the media, civil society organisations, and indeed all Nigerians must play their respective roles,” he said.

With this announcement, Nigeria’s electoral process for 2027 has formally commenced, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the most consequential elections in the country’s history.
