The Kaduna State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James Kanyip, KSM, has called on Christians across Nigeria to take an active role in politics, stressing that their participation is vital for achieving good governance at all levels.
Speaking at the third edition of the Joint All Catholic Church Knights Summit (JACKS) held in Abuja, Kanyip urged Christians not to shy away from politics, noting that only by participating can they influence the system positively.
“If people who are ‘clean’ do not get involved in politics, it cannot be clean. We cannot appreciate or change the system from the outside. We need to get inside. We are the salt of the earth. Therefore, Christians should get involved in politics,” he said.
He emphasised the need for leadership that inspires confidence across faiths, promotes unity, and rewards merit. Commending his relationship with political rivals as an example, he urged Christians, especially Catholic Knights, to prepare for the 2027 general elections by registering as voters, engaging candidates, and supporting credible leaders.
Kanyip also encouraged professionals to contribute their expertise through advisory councils and mentoring younger generations, stressing that conscience and moral values should guide political choices.
Quoting the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (June 8, 2022 communiqué), he reminded participants that while the Church does not align with political parties, it encourages lay faithful with talent for politics to engage for the common good.
He concluded by urging Christians to seek political appointments and elective positions, describing active participation as essential to shaping policies and influencing governance for the betterment of society.
