Nollywood star Mercy Johnson-Okojie has spoken publicly following her appointment as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
In a statement shared on her Instagram page, the actress expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in her, describing the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility. She said the role goes beyond service, stressing that it represents an opportunity to connect with citizens, listen to their concerns and advocate with purpose.
Johnson-Okojie noted that she accepts the responsibility with humility and dedication, pledging an unwavering commitment to service. She also affirmed her alignment with the governor’s SHINE Agenda, which focuses on responsive governance and sustainable development.
Addressing the people of Edo State, she said her new role centres on amplifying their voices and strengthening civic participation. According to her, the goal is to deepen public engagement, build trust between government and citizens, and promote a people-oriented administration where every voice counts. She thanked supporters for their goodwill, declaring that the work begins immediately.
Her appointment comes amid a history of active political involvement. Two years ago, she faced criticism for campaigning for Okpebholo during the Edo governorship race, where she mobilised support at a rally in Irruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area.
In 2023, she also drew backlash after endorsing Babajide Sanwo-Olu for a second term as Lagos governor, publicly praising his performance.
Johnson-Okojie was similarly visible during the 2023 House of Representatives election, vigorously supporting her husband, Prince Odi Okojie, whose eventual victory she celebrated openly.
