ASUU Warns FG: Pay New Lecturer Salaries or Face Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a four-day ultimatum to commence payment of lecturers under the newly approved salary structure or face a nationwide strike.

ASUU President Christopher Piwuna made the announcement on Thursday while addressing staff at Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi State. He warned that failure to act within the deadline would force the union to take “serious measures” that could shut down public universities across Nigeria.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Piwuna stated.

He emphasized that the union expects prompt action, stressing that non-compliance would trigger decisive measures.

The warning comes months after ASUU and the federal government reached a new agreement in January aimed at resolving long-standing disputes and ending the repeated strikes that have disrupted Nigeria’s university system for years.

A central feature of the agreement is a new salary structure intended to improve lecturers’ welfare and address issues stemming from the 2009 ASUU-government agreement, which was never fully implemented.
