Bayelsa State has stormed Abuja with a formidable contingent as it sets its sights on clinching a third consecutive title at the 2026 National Para Sports Festival.
The delegation, comprising 244 athletes and coaches, alongside 58 support staff, is poised to compete strongly at the national event, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a powerhouse in para sports.
Speaking ahead of the competition, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Baraladei Daniel Igali, expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness and praised the efforts behind the successful mobilization of the contingent.
“We are proud of the team we have assembled. Bayelsa has built a strong tradition in para sports, and this contingent represents the very best of our talent, resilience, and preparation,” Igali said.
He commended the Acting Director of Sports, Andrew Aye, for ensuring a seamless travel arrangement for the team.
“I must commend the Acting Director of Sports for his leadership and organization, particularly in ensuring that our athletes travelled in comfort with well-arranged transportation to Abuja,” he added.
The commissioner also acknowledged the contributions of the Permanent Secretary and management staff of the Ministry of Sports Development and the Bayelsa State Sports Council, noting that their collaborative efforts have strengthened the state’s sports system.
Igali reiterated that Bayelsa remains committed to inclusivity in sports, stressing that para athletes enjoy equal treatment with their able-bodied counterparts.
“In Bayelsa, there is no distinction between able-bodied and para athletes. Welfare, allowances, and prize monies are treated equally. This reflects our belief in fairness, inclusion, and respect for every athlete,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Governor Douye Diri has charged the team to deliver exceptional performances at the festival. He urged the athletes to justify the government’s consistent support by going all out for victory.
The governor expressed confidence in the contingent’s ability to once again make the state proud on the national stage.
Igali further disclosed that he would be present in Abuja to personally support and encourage the athletes throughout the competition.
With high morale, solid preparation, and a proven track record, Bayelsa State heads into the festival as one of the top contenders, determined to maintain its dominance in Nigeria’s para sports landscape.
