Ben Iroha Laments FIFA’s Delay on Nigeria’s Petition Against DR Congo

Former Super Eagles defender, Ben Iroha, has expressed concern over FIFA’s delay in ruling on Nigeria’s petition against DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a complaint alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the qualification play-off. The petition specifically challenges the eligibility of Leopards stars Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, citing Congolese laws that prohibit dual citizenship.

Nigeria, who were eliminated on penalties in November, could still qualify for their seventh World Cup if FIFA rules in favour of the NFF. However, the delay has left fans in suspense, torn between hope and frustration.

Speaking from Texas, Iroha warned that the uncertainty could disrupt Nigeria’s preparations for the intercontinental play-off scheduled for March. “It’s just a week to the end of February, yet we’re yet to hear from FIFA what their verdict is on such a crucial matter,” he said. “We expected that by now, FIFA would have come out with its verdict based on its findings, so that the team that its verdict eventually favoured would begin planning and preparation.”

Despite the uncertainty, Iroha remains optimistic that the ruling could swing in Nigeria’s favour, giving the Super Eagles another shot at World Cup qualification.
