Boko Haram Overruns Military Base in Borno, Commanding Officer Killed

Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly overrun another military base in Borno State, killing the commanding officer and several soldiers during a midnight assault.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday in Kukawa Local Government Area. Local sources said the insurgents stormed the town from multiple directions at about 12:30 a.m. before targeting the military camp.

“They stormed the town from multiple directions and launched an attack on the military camp,” a source told reporters.

Security sources confirmed that the attackers dislodged troops from the base, set several military vehicles ablaze, and carted away ammunition. One source disclosed that the commanding officer was among those killed, though details of other casualties were not immediately available.

The latest assault comes weeks after insurgents attempted to attack the same facility but were repelled by troops, who reportedly killed several terrorists during the encounter. That earlier success had drawn praise from residents, with the commanding officer widely celebrated for his bravery.

Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, the member representing Kukawa in the Borno State House of Assembly, expressed sadness over the renewed attack, lamenting that the base was eventually overrun despite the earlier victory.

The incident follows another recent assault by terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area, where soldiers and civilians were reportedly killed.

The latest development underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgents in Borno State, despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring peace and security in the region.
