CAN urge leaders to show empathy, ease economic hardship

By Ere-ebi Agedah Imisi

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on political leaders to embrace empathy and humility in governance, urging them to prioritise citizens’ welfare amid worsening economic conditions.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made the call in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja to commemorate Palm Sunday. He stated that effective leadership is defined more by quiet resolve than the outward display of power.

Okoh noted that the current economic realities demand leaders who are sensitive to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians, urging those in authority to adopt modest lifestyles and implement policies that would ease hardship. He stated that Christ’s symbolic entry into Jerusalem, riding on a colt instead of a symbol of might, offers a timeless lesson in humility and service.

“True leadership is not always loud. It is seen in restraint, in empathy, and in a steady focus on the common good. It is reflected in decisions that ease burdens, calm anxieties, and bring people together,” he said.

The cleric further stated that Nigerians require stability and reassurance, noting that citizens want to see leaders who are genuinely attuned to their daily survival challenges.

According to him, the country’s economic strain is partly driven by global geopolitical tensions. He noted that instability involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has disrupted global energy markets, with ripple effects on Nigeria’s economy.

Okoh stated that these global pressures have translated into rising fuel prices, increased transportation costs, and persistent food inflation affecting households nationwide.

He also challenged the Church and faith-based organisations to serve as pillars of hope during the difficult period, noting that they must provide guidance and support to vulnerable populations.

Addressing young people and those most affected by the downturn, he encouraged resilience, stating that the present challenges do not define Nigeria’s future.

“We must stand for peace; we must strengthen unity; we must support one another. In a season that can easily tilt towards tension, we must remain a steady source of light and hope,” he said.
