CTA boss bags accountability award, urges African leaders to unlock continent’s potential

By Michael Oche

The Executive Director of the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA), Faith Nwadishi, has called on African leaders and citizens to unlock the continent’s vast potential and reposition it among the world’s most developed regions.

Nwadishi made the call in Abuja while receiving the “Kwame Nkrumah Special Award of Recognition for Peace and Community Development” from the African Network for Accountability (ANFA).

The award, inspired by the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, celebrates African leaders who have demonstrated commitment to unity, accountability, and transformative development.

Describing the recognition as more than a personal honour, Nwadishi said it represents a defining moment for Africa’s future.

“This is a defining moment for Africa. We are beginning to recognise that we possess the resources to transform our continent and contribute meaningfully to the world,” she said.

“Africa should not be counted among the third world. It should stand among the most developed and advanced regions globally”, she said.

She emphasised that Nigeria holds a strategic position in Africa’s development trajectory, noting that the continent is undergoing a critical phase of reawakening that requires visionary leadership and renewed commitment to progress.

Drawing inspiration from past African leaders, Nwadishi said their legacies demonstrate what is possible when governance is anchored on accountability and purpose.

She, however, expressed concern over the declining representation of women in politics, describing it as a setback to democratic progress.

“It is worth noting that as far back as 1961, women were elected into parliament. Yet today, we are still grappling with only about four per cent female representation,” she said.

Nwadishi called for deliberate policies to reverse the trend, stressing that inclusive governance is key to sustainable development and accountability.

She dedicated the award to her board, community, and her late parents, expressing gratitude for the recognition.

In his remarks, Founder and Global President of ANFA, Sammi Ajai, described the award as a recognition of Nwadishi’s unwavering commitment to transparency, democratic governance, and social justice across Africa.

Speaking through ANFA Country Director in Nigeria, Azu Monday, Ajai said Nwadishi’s advocacy has strengthened democratic processes and amplified citizens’ voices.

“Her work continues to inspire hope and reinforce accountability at a time when transparency is often challenged,” he said.
