Eid Rush: NRC Deploys Strategy to Tackle Travel Congestion Nationwide

As millions of Nigerians prepare for mass travel ahead of Eid-el-Fitr, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has rolled out a coordinated plan aimed at reducing congestion and improving travel safety during the festive period.

The initiative comes amid concerns over increased road traffic, rising transport fares, and safety risks typically associated with peak holiday movements.

Rail officials say expanding train schedules across major corridors is part of a broader strategy to shift more passengers from overcrowded highways to rail, which is considered a safer and more reliable alternative.

Key intercity routes, including Lagos–Ibadan and Abuja–Kaduna, have been prioritised due to their high passenger demand and strategic importance in connecting major urban centres.

The plan also incorporates timetable adjustments to ensure more frequent departures, helping to manage passenger flow and minimise overcrowding at stations.

Transport experts note that the move could play a significant role in easing pressure on Nigeria’s road network, where traffic congestion and accidents often spike during festive periods.

In addition to increasing capacity, the NRC has emphasised strict adherence to safety protocols, urging passengers to arrive early for boarding and comply with all security checks.

Officials say these measures are necessary to maintain order and ensure seamless operations across stations during the high-traffic season.

The corporation also highlighted the importance of coordinated planning in managing large-scale travel, noting that efficient rail services can help stabilise transportation systems during national holidays.

As the Sallah celebrations approach, rail transport is expected to serve as a critical backbone for intercity movement, offering Nigerians a more structured and predictable travel experience.

With the anticipated surge in passenger numbers, authorities believe the proactive steps taken by the Nigerian Railway Corporation will help reduce travel disruptions and enhance overall safety during one of the busiest periods of the year.
