FCT Minister Declares Work-Free Day, Movement Restriction Ahead of Area Council Elections

Ahead of the February 21, 2026 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has declared Friday, February 20, a work-free day, alongside a restriction of movement from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The directive was communicated in a statement by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, and reinforced during a special broadcast on national television and radio stations on Thursday.

In his address, Wike urged FCT residents to participate actively in the elections, describing it as a crucial opportunity to shape the future of the territory. He called on voters to approach the polls with purpose, responsibility, and respect for the rules, one another, and the outcome of the elections.

“With the approval of President Bola Tinubu, the restriction of movement will be strictly enforced to facilitate voting,” Wike said, adding that all security agencies have been directed to ensure compliance.

The Minister also commended the President for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, noting that it reflects a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring transparent elections. He expressed hope that the polls would usher in quality leaders who will contribute meaningfully to the development, peace, and prosperity of the FCT.
