Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic fire incident that recently engulfed Singer Market in Kano State, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of goods worth more than ₦5 billion.
In a statement issued by her Special Adviser on Media, Austine Elemue, the Minister described the inferno as heartbreaking and a painful setback for hardworking traders whose daily efforts sustain families and contribute significantly to the local economy. She noted that the devastation goes beyond material possessions, touching the very foundation of victims’ hopes and aspirations.
Mahmoud extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to traders and business owners whose shops and goods were destroyed. She prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls and for strength and resilience for all those affected.
Calling for preventive measures, the Minister urged relevant authorities and emergency management agencies to intensify efforts to avert future occurrences through improved safety standards, fire prevention strategies, and public awareness campaigns. She also emphasized the need for timely support and relief to help victims recover and rebuild their livelihoods.
Reaffirming her solidarity with the government and people of Kano State, Mahmoud assured them of her continued prayers and support during this difficult period.
It will be recalled that the inferno destroyed over 1,000 businesses, caused damages estimated at ₦5 billion, and left at least seven people initially reported missing.
