The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members to May 10, 2026, revising a key component of the 2027 general election timetable.
The move follows concerns raised by political parties over the earlier schedule, which had fixed submissions between April 1 and April 21, 2026.
In a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission said the adjustment aligns with the Electoral Act, which mandates that parties submit their membership registers at least 21 days before their primaries.
INEC also confirmed that political parties are now free to conduct their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026, provided they meet the new submission deadline.
The commission stressed that adherence to the revised timetable is critical to ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
