Kano Deputy Governor Reportedly Resigns, Denies Wrongdoing

Confusion has emerged in Kano State following reports that Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Gwarzo has stepped down from office, even as the state government is yet to issue an official confirmation.

The development was disclosed in a statement by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which indicated that the decision was reached after internal consultations aimed at preserving stability within the state’s political structure.

According to the group, the deputy governor’s reported resignation was influenced by circumstances that had made it increasingly difficult for him to effectively discharge his responsibilities in office.

The situation comes against the backdrop of mounting pressure from the Kano State House of Assembly, which had recently levelled allegations against the deputy governor, further intensifying political tensions within the state.

Despite the claims, the political movement insisted that the decision should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt, maintaining that Gwarzo’s record in public service reflects integrity and commitment.

The absence of an official statement from the state government has, however, fueled speculation over the true status of the deputy governor, with observers pointing to possible behind-the-scenes negotiations within the state’s political leadership.

Sources within political circles suggest the move may be part of a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly as the Kwankwasiyya Movement seeks to consolidate its structure and influence.

The group confirmed that Gwarzo is expected to redirect his efforts toward strengthening its political base, signalling a shift from governance to strategic political engagement.

As of press time, it remains unclear whether formal resignation procedures have been completed or if the development will trigger constitutional processes within the state’s executive arm.

The unfolding situation is likely to shape the political landscape in Kano in the coming months, especially as stakeholders await clarity from the government on the next course of action.
