L-PRES Partners NiMet to Boost Climate-Resilient Livestock Production

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has strengthened efforts to improve Nigeria’s livestock sector through a strategic collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), aimed at enhancing weather monitoring and supporting climate-resilient livestock production.

L-PRES National Coordinator, Sanusi Abubakar, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, where he formally handed over four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to the agency.

Abubakar congratulated Anosike on the successful public presentation of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, noting NiMet’s critical role in providing vital climate information that supports agricultural planning nationwide. He stressed that collaboration with NiMet is essential for L-PRES to achieve its mandate of strengthening resilience within Nigeria’s livestock value chain.

According to him, the provision of weather monitoring equipment will help generate reliable meteorological data that livestock farmers can use to make informed decisions, particularly in the face of increasing climate variability.

In his remarks, Anosike commended L-PRES for the initiative, describing the donation of the AWOS units as a significant boost to Nigeria’s weather observation infrastructure. He explained that the stations would be deployed in rehabilitated grazing reserves across the country to provide accurate and localized weather information for livestock farmers.

The NiMet boss added that improved weather monitoring will enable farmers to better anticipate climate conditions, manage grazing resources effectively, and ultimately increase livestock productivity.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration, noting that the partnership will help protect Nigeria’s livestock industry from climate-related risks while improving farmers’ livelihoods and promoting long-term agricultural sustainability.
