Malami, Son Granted ₦400m Bail on Terrorism, Firearms Charges

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted bail to former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz, on terrorism and illegal firearms possession charges. Each was admitted to ₦200 million bail, totaling ₦400 million, but both remain in Kuje Prison pending fulfillment of bail conditions.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik approved the bail applications argued by their lead counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN). The court ordered each defendant to produce two sureties, including at least one property owner in Abuja’s Maitama or Asokoro districts. Property titles, valid international passports, and affidavits of means must be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar.

Malami and his son are also required to surrender their international passports and recent passport photographs. The trial is scheduled to begin on March 4.

The Department of State Services (DSS) arraigned the duo on a five-count charge, including abetting terrorism by allegedly refusing to prosecute suspected financiers during Malami’s tenure as AGF, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at their residence in Gesse Phase II, Birnin Kebbi LGA, Kebbi State.

Items listed in the charge include a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 live Redstar AAA 5’20 cartridges, and 27 expended cartridges, allegedly held without a license. The prosecution cited violations of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Firearms Act, 2004.
