NFF Denies Reports of FIFA Ruling on Nigeria’s Protest Against DR Congo

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that FIFA has not issued any decision regarding Nigeria’s protest against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) over alleged use of ineligible players during the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs.

NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, dismissed reports claiming that FIFA had ruled in favor of either Nigeria or DR Congo, describing them as false and misleading.

“There is no decision from FIFA at this time. Any claims that a ruling has been made are false. FIFA has not communicated any verdict to the NFF or the Congolese federation,” Olajire stated.

Nigeria had filed a complaint after being eliminated by DR Congo in the play-offs, questioning the eligibility of some Congolese players under dual nationality laws.

The Super Eagles’ qualifying campaign was turbulent, starting poorly under managers Jose Peseiro and Finidi George, with only three points from the opening four matches. The appointment of Eric Chelle revived the team’s fortunes, securing 14 points from a possible 18 in the final six matches to reach the playoffs.

Despite this resurgence, Nigeria failed to capitalize on FIFA’s sanction against South Africa, who were docked three points for fielding ineligible player Teboho Mokoena.

The NFF emphasized that it is awaiting official communication from FIFA and urged the public to disregard speculative reports.
