Nigeria Risks Widespread Instability as Insecurity Worsens Across States — ACF Warns

Arewa Consultative Forum has raised fresh alarm over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, warning that the country could face widespread instability if urgent reforms are not implemented.
The group said the rising wave of attacks across multiple states signals deeper structural failures in the nation’s security architecture, calling for immediate and decisive government intervention.
Rising Attacks Expose Security Gaps
Recent violent incidents in Borno State, Plateau State, Katsina State, Zamfara State, Niger State and Kwara State have heightened fears among citizens, with communities experiencing repeated attacks, loss of lives, and destruction of property.
In Borno, a bomb explosion in Maiduguri reportedly killed several people shortly after assaults on military facilities, while in Plateau, armed groups attacked communities and security personnel.
Concerns Over Ineffective Counter-Terror Strategy
The ACF criticised current counter-insurgency efforts, describing them as insufficient to stop the growing threat posed by extremist groups, including Boko Haram.
According to the forum, the persistence of such attacks reflects a lack of strong deterrence and raises questions about the effectiveness of existing security measures.
Threat to National Stability and Economy
Beyond the immediate casualties, the forum warned that continued insecurity is damaging local economies, displacing communities, and weakening social cohesion across affected regions.
It noted that the disruption of livelihoods and rising fear among residents could further slow economic activities and deepen humanitarian challenges.
Call for Urgent Security Reforms
The ACF urged the federal government to overhaul its security approach, stressing the need for stronger political will and coordinated military action.
It called for intensified efforts to dismantle armed groups and restore public confidence, warning that failure to act swiftly could push the country toward a broader crisis.
“Time Running Out” — ACF
The group emphasised that Nigeria is at a critical point, where delayed action could have long-term consequences for national unity and governance.
It urged authorities to prioritise security above all else, insisting that restoring peace is essential to preventing further deterioration.
