The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has intensified preparations for its National Convention scheduled for March 29–30, urging members to remain united as the party positions itself for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the party’s 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday, Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC), Abdulrahman Mohammed, described the forthcoming convention as a defining moment in the PDP’s rebuilding process.
He stressed that the exercise should not be seen as a contest for supremacy but as an opportunity to strengthen internal cohesion.
“This convention is not merely a routine exercise; it is a critical milestone that will shape the future direction of our party. There is no victor and no vanquished,” Mohammed said.
The NCWC chairman noted that despite recent legal and political challenges, the party has made significant progress in stabilising its structures and restoring confidence among members, attributing this to collective resolve and adherence to due process.
Mohammed also commended Nyesom Wike for his contributions to the party, citing his “doggedness, sacrifices, and courage” in helping to sustain stability within the PDP.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Mao Ohuabunwa, described the NEC meeting as a critical juncture for the party, calling for wisdom, restraint, and a strong sense of responsibility among stakeholders.
Ohuabunwa highlighted ongoing internal reforms, particularly the introduction of electronic membership registration, which he said would enhance transparency, strengthen internal democracy, and improve strategic planning.
“A credible membership register is the foundation of any serious political organisation. It strengthens confidence among members and stakeholders,” he said.
On the issue of zoning, the BoT chairman urged party leaders to adopt fairness, equity, and inclusiveness in their decisions, stressing that the PDP’s strength lies in its ability to accommodate diverse interests for the collective good.
The PDP National Convention is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s leadership structure and strategy ahead of the next general elections.
