Super Eagles’ win boosts Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy – Foreign Affairs Ministry

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has congratulated the Super Eagles on their victory over Algeria, over the weekend, describing the result as a morale-boosting achievement that reinforces Nigeria’s long-standing excellence in international sports and strengthens the country’s global image.
The congratulatory message was issued in a statement signed on Sunday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said the triumph underscores the growing role of sports in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

Sports, particularly football, remain a vital pillar of Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy and constitute a key Presidential Ministerial Deliverable under the current foreign policy framework,” the statement noted, adding that “through football, Nigeria projects core national values of unity, resilience, discipline, fair competition, and collective aspiration, thereby strengthening people-to-people connections and enhancing the country’s international image beyond conventional diplomatic engagement”.
The ministry also acknowledged the gesture by businessman Abdul-Samad Rabiu, who pledged incentives to the Super Eagles in recognition of their performance, describing the move as a reflection of responsible citizenship and the positive role of the private sector in promoting Nigeria’s soft power and national cohesion.

It noted that the conduct and performance of the Super Eagles continue to position the team as effective cultural ambassadors, fostering solidarity, mutual respect and positive engagement across Africa and beyond, while reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful competition and cultural exchange through sports diplomacy.
As the Super Eagles advance to the semi-finals, the ministry called on Nigerian diplomatic missions and diaspora communities worldwide to amplify the achievement as a symbol of unity and global relevance, reaffirming its commitment to leveraging sports and other cultural assets in support of national development.

The Federal Government and the Nigerian people, the statement added, remain firmly behind the Super Eagles and wish the team continued success as they represent the nation with pride and honour.
