Team Bayelsa finishes strong, as curtain falls on NPG, Abuja 2026 .

The curtain has fallen on the 2026 National Para Games in Abuja, as Team Bayelsa ended the campaign with pride, and promise.

Competing as defending champions, Bayelsa once again proved its pedigree on the national stage, finishing second overall with a total of 97 medals, comprising 25 gold, 36 silver, and 36 bronze.

In a competition marked by intensity and rising standards, the team held its ground, delivering consistent results across multiple sports.

From the tracks to the pools, and from the courts to the weightlifting arena, the athletes showcased not just talent, but resilience, discipline, and a winning mentality.

Reacting on the outcome, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports Development, Mr. Pere Efeke, who was on ground with the team, described their performance as commendable and forward-looking.

He also thanked, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering support for sports development, and to the Honourable Commissioner, Daniel Igali, for his leadership.

According to him, the focus now is clear, to regroup, improve, and come back stronger.

On his part, the Director of Sports, Bayelsa State Sports Council, Mr. Andrew Aye acerted that the athletes competed with determination and delivered results that have kept Bayelsa among the top-performing states in the country.

“We would have loved to defend the title, but finishing second is significant, especially in a competition of this magnitude”.

“That been said, we are not complacent, we will critically assess our performance and strengthen our systems to ensure even better outcomes in future competitions”. Aye said.

He unbehalf of the Sports Council appreciated the State Government, led by His Excellency, Douye Diri, for the support, assuring that they remain committed to sustaining excellence in sports development.

He also commended the Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, Champion Daniel Igali, for his leadership.
