President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the 2.9-kilometre dualised New Yenagoa City Road One linking Airport Road, marking a major milestone in Bayelsa State’s urban renewal drive.
The project, executed under the administration of Governor Douye Diri, is aimed at expanding access to the fast-growing New Yenagoa City and improving mobility within the state capital.
The commissioning ceremony, held in Yenagoa, was attended by former President Goodluck Jonathan, alongside top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, and several governors from across the country.
Speaking during the event, Governor Diri described the President’s visit as historic and expressed appreciation for his support and partnership with Bayelsa State. He noted that the newly inaugurated road would significantly enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and support the government’s vision of building a modern capital city.
Diri highlighted that the project forms part of a broader infrastructure agenda under his “Assured Prosperity” programme, which includes roads, bridges, and power initiatives designed to open up rural communities and boost economic activities.
The governor also commended the Federal Government’s policy reforms, particularly in the power sector, which he said have enabled the state to pursue independent energy solutions, including the construction of a 60-megawatt gas-fired power plant.
President Tinubu, who also commissioned other legacy projects during the visit, including the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge and segments of key senatorial roads, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting infrastructural development across the country.
Governor Diri further noted that the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge, a long-awaited project, would connect over 60 communities in Southern Ijaw and parts of Brass Local Government Area, reducing travel time and transportation costs while boosting local economies.
He added that ongoing road projects such as the Sagbama–Ekeremor–Agge corridor would integrate previously isolated communities into the state’s economic framework and enhance access to coastal areas, creating opportunities within the blue economy.
The governor used the occasion to appeal for continued Federal Government support, including reimbursement for completed project phases and further assistance on critical road networks across the state.
The inauguration of the New Yenagoa City Road and other projects underscores ongoing efforts by both the state and federal governments to drive development, improve infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for residents of Bayelsa State.
