Tombia Market women empowered on health, safety, wellbeing

By Eunice Nnachi, Yenagoa

Women’s health challenges, rising cases of drug abuse, poor mental well-being, and limited support for children with special needs took center stage at Tombia Market in Yenagoa, Bayelsa as women traders received vital sensitization on issues affecting their daily lives and families.

The outreach, organized by the
Safe Haven Positivity Initiative (SHPI) in collaboration with the
Eunice Nnachi Women Advocacy Foundation (ENWAF) and Bremon Educational Consult Limited, brought together dozens of women in an interactive session aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and informed decision-making.

At the bustling market, facilitators engaged participants on the dangers associated with drug abuse, stressing its far-reaching consequences on physical and mental health. Administrative Secretary of ENWAF, Mrs. Ebizimo Agedah, cautioned that substance abuse often leads to risky behaviors, weakened immune systems, and long-term psychological challenges.

She urged women to consciously avoid environments that encourage drug and alcohol use, while embracing positive relationships that support personal growth.

Mental health awareness also formed a key part of the engagement, as Executive Director of SHPI, Blessing Akoko, emphasized the need for women to prioritize their emotional well-being. She noted that many women silently struggle with anxiety and depression, often without seeking help.

According to her, SHPI provides access to counseling services and mental health resources tailored to support women in regaining emotional balance and stability.

The session further addressed the often-overlooked needs of children living with special needs. Brenda Nagberi of Bremon Educational Consult Limited encouraged mothers to seek professional guidance and early intervention for their children.

She explained that specialized care and structured learning support can significantly improve the development and overall quality of life for such children, while also easing the burden on their families.

Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. Many noted that the information shared would not only influence their personal choices but also help them better support their families and communities.

The sensitization campaign underscores the commitment of the collaborating organizations to empowering women at the grassroots level. By providing access to knowledge, support systems, and practical resources, the initiative continues to play a crucial role in improving the health, resilience, and socio-economic well-being of women in Bayelsa State.
