Torch of Unity Arrives Imo State Ahead of Niger Delta Games

The Second Edition of the Niger Delta Games Torch of Unity arrived Imo State from Abia on Thursday and was received at the Government House by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The torch tour, which began in Cross River State before moving to Akwa Ibom and Abia, is a prelude to the games scheduled to hold in Edo State from February 20. On arrival, the Abia Team, accompanied by officials of the Imo State Sports Commission, Ministry of Sports, and athletes, moved in procession from the Dan Anyiam Stadium to the Government House where the Governor awaited.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, Governor Uzodimma received the torch amidst cheers from enthusiastic athletes. He commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the initiative, stressing that it would foster unity in the region and improve athletes’ physical fitness. “To the athletes, I charge you to go for gold and make the state proud. I commend the NDDC for this initiative as a way of fostering unity between our people and making our young men and women healthy. I urge other agencies to emulate the NDDC so that Nigeria will continue to be one,” he said.

Earlier, Imo Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Evaristus Obinna Onyeocha, explained that the torch was lit in Cross River on February 9, moved to Akwa Ibom and Abia, before arriving in Imo, from where it will head to Rivers State. He noted that Imo athletes are in high spirits and ready to compete in Edo, urging citizens to support the team throughout the games.

The Torch of Unity’s journey underscores the spirit of regional solidarity and anticipation ahead of the Niger Delta Games 2026.
