Authorities of the University of Jos have postponed examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday following a fatal attack by suspected gunmen in Angwan Rukuba, a community in Jos that houses many staff and students of the institution.
The decision was conveyed in a security advisory signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, on behalf of the Registrar.
According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor approved the postponement and directed that the affected examinations be rescheduled to a later date.
The university explained that the attack, which occurred late Sunday evening, has heightened tension in Angwan Rukuba and surrounding areas, raising serious safety concerns for members of the university community.
“The University community members have been strongly advised to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution in their movements both on and off campus with immediate effect,” the statement read.
Students and staff were also urged to avoid early morning movements and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the university’s security unit.
Angwan Rukuba is known to host a significant number of students and employees of the University of Jos, making the incident particularly concerning for the institution.
While details of casualties from the attack remain unclear, residents described the incident as deadly, further intensifying fears of insecurity in the area.
The university reiterated its commitment to the safety of its students and staff, assuring that normal academic activities would resume once the security situation improves.
The development adds to growing concerns over security challenges in parts of Jos, where sporadic attacks have continued to disrupt daily life.
