President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing family considerations. In a post on his official X handle, the president thanked Egbetokun for his decades of service, praising his professionalism and commitment to internal security.
Tinubu announced the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General with immediate effect. He assured that Disu’s appointment would soon be made substantive, pending consideration by the Police Council and Senate confirmation in line with the Police Act of 2020.
Sources at the Presidency revealed that Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Monday. He had assumed office in June 2023 and resigned on February 24, 2026, after his tenure was extended last year despite criticisms.
Disu, the 23rd Inspector General of Police, currently heads the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos. Born in Lagos in 1966, he joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has served in various capacities, including Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, Head of the Intelligence Response Team, and Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the FCT.
He holds degrees in English, Public Administration, and Criminology, and has undergone specialized training in leadership, intelligence, forensic investigations, and counter‑fraud operations. Disu is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
