Armed Forces Remembrance Day: CDS vows to root out all threats to national security

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, General Olufemi Oluyede, has expressed the Nigerian Armed Forces’ resolve to decisively confront all forces threatening the nation’s unity, peace, and progress, declaring that the military will “give no quarter” to adversaries.
General Oluyede made the pledge on Monday in Abuja in a goodwill message to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, AFCRD, a solemn occasion dedicated to honouring fallen heroes whose sacrifices, he said, laid the foundation for Nigeria’s freedom and democratic ideals.
He described the commitment of the fallen servicemen and women as the highest expression of patriotism, assuring that their courage and service would never be forgotten. The defence chief also acknowledged the resilience and sacrifices of their families, noting that the nation remains indebted to them.

Commending troops currently deployed across various theatres of operation, the CDS praised their professionalism, bravery, and loyalty, saying their efforts have continued to strengthen national security. According to him, the battle scars borne by many soldiers stand as enduring symbols of valour and unwavering dedication to defending Nigeria against both internal and cross-border threats.
General Oluyede emphasised that troop welfare remains a top priority under his strategic leadership philosophy, which focuses on enhanced joint operations, improved welfare, and sound administration. He said these measures are designed to reinforce the armed forces’ operational effectiveness within a whole-of-government security approach.
He expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his steadfast leadership and continued support for the military.

Reassuring Nigerians of the armed forces’ unyielding commitment to protecting democracy, peace, and national stability, the CDS urged citizens to use the remembrance period to promote unity and reject divisive tendencies.
He also encouraged Nigerians to wear the Armed Forces Remembrance emblem with pride, describing it as a symbol of gratitude to fallen heroes and serving personnel.
General Oluyede concluded by praying for the eternal rest of the departed and reaffirmed the military’s determination to secure a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Nigeria.
