The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has cautioned that the increasing number of court judgments ordering the deregistration of political parties could threaten Nigeria’s democracy and weaken the country’s multi-party system.
Speaking on Tuesday, IPAC spokesman Martins Egbeola said recent judgments affecting several parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), raise serious concerns about the future of political participation in the country.
Egbeola stressed that democracy thrives when citizens have multiple political options, warning that reducing the number of parties could shrink democratic space and limit political freedom. He urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to ensure judges remain independent and uphold the constitution without political influence.
He also warned against attempts to use state institutions to weaken opposition parties, insisting that Nigeria’s multi-party democracy must be protected. “The judiciary is the last hope of the common man and must not be seen as a tool for political interests,” he said.
Egbeola added that no effort to impose a one-party system would succeed, as Nigerians remain committed to democratic values and political diversity.
