Delta State Police Command has revealed that more than 50 families in Delta State have reportedly been left grieving after losing relatives in road crashes and other preventable incidents in just over two months.
The development reportedly prompted the state’s police authorities to launch a statewide crackdown on reckless driving and other traffic violations.
The deaths, recorded between July and the second week of September 2026, have heightened concern over road safety in the state, with the Police Command warning motorists that dangerous driving practices would no longer be tolerated.
The command said it would commence Operation Velvet Tuesday, targeting motorists who drive against traffic, popularly known as “one-way”, use unregistered vehicles, or violate other road safety regulations on highways and major roads across the state.
The command’s spokesman, Bright Edafe, disclosed this while expressing concern over the rising fatalities.
He said many of the deaths recorded during the period were linked to road traffic crashes and other preventable or induced incidents, noting that greater caution by motorists and other road users could have saved lives.
Edafe warned motorists against driving against traffic, saying anyone caught violating the rule would be arrested and prosecuted.
He said the enforcement operation was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but to protect lives and restore discipline on the state’s roads.
