Many feared dead as helicopter crashes in Ondo

Many people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, according to reports reaching Nigerian Pilot.

The incident occurred on Monday, throwing the riverine community into panic as residents reportedly scampered for safety.

Details of the crash, including the number of people aboard the helicopter and the condition of any possible survivors, remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed the incident, saying the helicopter crashed in a swampy area near a naval facility.

He said the circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately clear.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the police command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said investigation had commenced into the incident.

Igbokoda is a major commercial centre in Ilaje, a coastal and oil-producing area of Ondo State where helicopters are frequently used for oil and gas logistics operations.

The cause of the crash had not been established as of the time of filing this report.
