FCT strike: NLC rejects Wike’s ‘No Work, No Pay’ threat, directs teachers to stay home

By Eunice Orike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has directed teachers and other affected workers to stay away from work as the dispute between organised labour and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) over promotion-related issues continues.

The council, in a letter dated October 11, 2026, addressed to the leadership of its affiliated unions, urged them to comply with the directive amid the disagreement over the implementation of promotion policies and other outstanding labour matters.

The directive comes against the backdrop of tensions between the FCTA and organised labour over the promotion of workers, including concerns about the application of vacancy requirements and the treatment of affected staff.

The NLC called on its affiliates to maintain solidarity and ensure compliance with the council’s position as the dispute continues.

The disagreement has raised concerns among workers over the implications of the FCTA’s promotion policy, particularly for employees who believe they have been unfairly affected by the administration of promotion exercises.

The labour movement is demanding that the outstanding issues be addressed to protect workers’ rights and ensure fairness in the civil service.

The council urged its affiliated unions to communicate the directive to their members and remain united as organised labour presses its demands.

The development adds to the ongoing dispute between the FCTA and labour unions over the welfare, promotion and career progression of workers in the territory.
