Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has pledged to build an office complex and donate a bus to the newly established Bende branch of the Nigerian Bar Association in Abia State.
Kalu made the pledge on Friday while hosting chairmen of various NBA branches in Abia State, led by the chairman of the Aba branch, Charles Onuchukwu.
Expressing appreciation for the creation of the Bende NBA branch, the Deputy Speaker said he remained committed to supporting his community and the legal profession.
According to him, the establishment of the branch in his hometown was a significant honour, adding that he intended to leave a lasting legacy for lawyers in the area.
Kalu said plans were underway to secure a suitable site for the branch, where an office complex and relaxation space would be built. He added that he could also donate one of his personal properties for the project.
He further promised to provide a clean and functional bus to aid the operations of the branch.
The Deputy Speaker urged lawyers to remain committed to justice, fairness and equity, describing members of the legal profession as vital instruments in defending the rights of both ordinary citizens and influential members of society.
He stressed that although Lady Justice is blind, justice itself must remain alert to what is fair and right.
Kalu also highlighted the important relationship between the Bar and the Parliament, noting that lawmakers play a key role in strengthening Nigeria’s legal framework through legislation.
He encouraged lawyers to stay updated on emerging laws, especially the Electoral Act, while emphasizing that parliamentary work is focused on building strong institutions and systems that can sustain accountability.
The Deputy Speaker further called for greater recognition of lawyers serving in parliament for their contributions to lawmaking and national development
