China Targets Nigeria in Global Green Strategy, Expands Climate Leadership Push

China has stepped up efforts to position itself as a global leader in climate action, naming Nigeria a key partner in its expanding green development strategy.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said the Asian powerhouse is scaling up cooperation with African countries as part of a broader push to influence global climate governance and accelerate clean energy transitions.
Nigeria Gains Strategic Importance in China’s Green Agenda
The envoy disclosed that China has already executed hundreds of clean energy projects across Africa, with solar (photovoltaic) capacity exceeding 1.5 gigawatts. Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is expected to play a central role in future collaborations.
He noted that Chinese-backed green technology projects are helping African nations reduce dependence on fossil fuels while improving energy access.
Green Technology and Infrastructure Drive Partnership
China’s environmental cooperation with Nigeria extends beyond energy into ecological restoration. African countries, including Nigeria, are leveraging China’s experience from the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program to support the Great Green Wall Initiative.
The partnership is aimed at tackling desertification, improving agriculture, and strengthening climate resilience across the Sahel region.
China Pushes Global Climate Leadership
Ambassador Yu emphasized that China is not only investing abroad but also advancing ambitious domestic policies to lead global sustainability efforts.
The country recently unveiled its 15th Five-Year Plan, which prioritises green and low-carbon development, alongside stronger participation in international climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement.
He added that China remains the world’s largest supplier of renewable energy equipment, accounting for over 80% of photovoltaic components and 70% of wind power systems globally.
Jobs, Investment and Global Influence
China’s green expansion is also reshaping global labour markets, with the country responsible for nearly half of all jobs in the renewable energy sector worldwide.
Analysts say this growing influence gives China a strategic edge in shaping climate policies, technology standards, and investment flows across developing economies, including Nigeria.
Long-Term Climate and Economic Impact
Yu stressed that China’s collaboration with Nigeria will go beyond environmental goals to include economic growth, infrastructure development, and technology transfer.
He said both countries share the challenge of balancing rapid development with environmental protection, adding that stronger cooperation could help achieve sustainable growth while addressing climate risks.
