The Bayelsa State Police Command has debunked widespread social media reports alleging that a suspected ritualist was caught with a fresh human heart in Sagbama, stating that investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, the command said preliminary findings showed that the suspect, identified as Peter Alale, 40, from Agbere Community in Sagbama Local Government Area, was arrested in possession of a broken white plate containing suspected human parts.
According to the police, the suspect claimed during interrogation that he found the suspected human parts at the Sagbama Council Secretariat Junction, Mile 3, and was attempting to dispose of them in a nearby bush before he was apprehended.
The command clarified that contrary to reports circulating online, it has not yet been confirmed that the recovered exhibits were human organs. The police disclosed that the suspected parts have been recovered and sent for medical examination and analysis to determine their true nature.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, Iyamah Daniel, directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter.
The police commissioner also urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified or sensational information capable of creating panic in the state.
“The Bayelsa State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and will continue to take decisive action against all forms of criminality,” the statement added.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users alleging ritual-related activities before the police clarification was issued.
