Abia to empower 17,000 farmers under input support programme

By Joe Akwarandu, Umuahia

The Abia State Government has concluded plans to empower more than 17,000 farmers across the state under its Farmers’ Input Support Programme, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing food security and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

The programme, themed “Improved Inputs, Increased Yields, Sustainable Prosperity for Farmers,” will provide beneficiaries with critical agricultural inputs to increase crop yields, improve farm productivity and stimulate sustainable economic growth in the sector.

According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, Governor Alex Otti will officially flag off the programme on Friday at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Kanu said the initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a major driver of economic growth, job creation and food sufficiency in Abia State.

The statement added that the event would be hosted by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, whose ministry has continued to implement policies and programmes aimed at strengthening the state’s agricultural value chain and supporting farmers.

Farmers, agricultural stakeholders, development partners, traditional rulers, community leaders and members of the public are expected to attend the event, which was described as a major milestone in the state’s drive to reposition agriculture for sustainable development.
