Adebayo Unveils ‘Third Way’ Economic Model to Tackle Poverty, Inequality

By David Odama

The Social Democratic Party, SDP Presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo has proposed a governance model that seeks to combine the strengths of private enterprise with an active State intervention aimed at addressing poverty, unemployment and inequality in Nigeria.

The proposal is contained in his 2027–2031 governance blueprint, Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity, which places social democracy and the Basic Needs Approach at the centre of his economic and development strategy.

Adebayo argues that economic growth should not be treated as an end in itself, but should translate into better living conditions and greater opportunities for ordinary Nigerians.

Under the proposed model, private businesses and markets would remain key drivers of investment, innovation, production and job creation, while government would intervene where markets fail, essential public goods are threatened or strategic national investments are required.

The blueprint identifies security, food, clean water, affordable energy, healthcare, education, housing, decent employment, transportation, justice, environmental protection and digital connectivity as essential components of a productive society.

It also challenges the conventional reliance on indicators such as GDP growth, government revenue and infrastructure spending as primary measures of national progress.

According to Adebayo, the ultimate test of governance should be whether citizens experience meaningful improvements in their daily lives.

The blueprint rejects a rigid choice between capitalism and state control, arguing instead for a capable government working alongside a productive and competitive private sector.

Adebayo presents social democracy as a framework that allows economic activity to pursue wider social objectives while preserving the role of enterprise and investment.

The philosophy underpins his proposals on security, agriculture, employment, education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and social protection, with human welfare positioned as the central measure of development.
