US-Based Coach Michael Nsien Tipped as Possible Replacement if Chelle Exits Super Eagles

United States-based Nigerian coach Michael Nsien has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle should he leave his post.

Chelle, who has one year left on his current deal, is locked in contract talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over an extension. While he guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and impressed with his attacking brand of football, negotiations have reportedly stalled after the coach switched agents. The new representative is believed to be behind an offer from Angola, who are keen to appoint Chelle following the departure of their coach after a poor AFCON campaign.

Sources within the NFF revealed that if Chelle decides to walk away, Nsien is the favourite to step in. Nsien, a former Nigeria U23 international, was in contention for the role before Chelle’s appointment. He has built a strong coaching résumé in the United States, starting at Tulsa FC where he rose from academy director to head coach. His success earned him a role with the U16 team of the USA, before progressing to head coach of the U19/20 squad last year. He is currently serving as assistant coach at Major League Soccer (MLS) side Nashville SC.

With Chelle’s future uncertain and Angola circling, the NFF may soon be forced to make a decision. Nsien’s blend of Nigerian roots and international coaching experience positions him as a credible option to lead the Super Eagles into their next chapter.
