The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, has revealed that arrangements are underway to upgrade the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with the goal of transforming it into a world-class facility capable of hosting major sporting and non-sporting events.
Dikko disclosed this on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from four Federal Government-owned media organisations: the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), at the commission’s headquarters.
He explained that the planned improvements include enhancing the stadium’s grass playing surface, lighting systems, and other essential infrastructure. The commission is also considering roofing the stadium to improve its appearance, functionality, and suitability for diverse events.
According to Dikko, the vision is to reposition the stadium as a multipurpose sports and entertainment hub that generates revenue beyond match days. “We want the stadium to be active, not only when football matches are being played but also for other events and commercial activities. The plan is to develop the stadium into a vibrant sports complex with complementary facilities, including hospitality, commercial and conference services,” he said.
He added that the commission is working towards a model that encourages private-sector investment in the development and management of sports infrastructure, reducing dependence on government funding while creating jobs and business opportunities.
Dikko stressed that sports infrastructure should be treated as a national asset capable of generating economic benefits when properly maintained and commercially managed. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with the media in promoting sports development, attracting investment, and showcasing Nigeria’s sporting achievements.
