Delta Police demote officers for POS bribe

By Anastacia Eluwa,  Asaba

The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, after they were caught in a viral video extorting money from a motorist using a Point-of-Sale (POS) machine at their station in Asaba.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe confirmed the disciplinary action in a statement on Tuesday. He explained that the officers were tried in an orderly room trial and found guilty of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion, and Discreditable Conduct, contrary to the Police Act, 2020 (LFN).

The Commissioner of Police upheld their punishment, reducing Jeremiah to Sergeant and Ehirim to Constable.

The statement further emphasised that the use of POS terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations is strictly prohibited. Edafe warned that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from the public under any guise, stressing that any officer found culpable will face disciplinary action.
