The FCT Police Command has arrested 70 suspects during a raid on criminal flashpoints around Unity Fountain and its environs in Maitama, Abuja, following a viral video of an alleged robbery in the area.
A statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, explained that the raid was ordered by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, after the video surfaced online.
The command said the operation was carried out by operatives of Maitama Division who stormed identified blackspots around Unity Fountain to track down those connected to the alleged robbery and other criminal activities.
According to the police, 30 of the suspects were released after preliminary screening, while 40 others were retained in custody for further investigation.
The command also disclosed that the victim of the alleged robbery had identified two of the suspects as persons he recognised during the incident.
The two suspects, alongside the other persons still in custody, are being investigated as the police expand efforts to identify and arrest anyone else linked to the offence.
The police said the raid was part of efforts to restore safety around Unity Fountain and prevent criminal activities in the area.
The command urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the nearest police station.
