The Federal Government has commenced moves to transform the country’s mining and mineral potential into national prosperity.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake stated this at the induction of the maiden Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) Post-NYSC Graduate Skill Capacity-Building Programme.
The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development had highlighted a critical roadmap to unlock the nation’s estimated $700 billion in untapped mineral wealth.
Alake said that Nigeria’s mining value chain offered significant opportunities for young professionals to establish businesses in geological data services, mineral testing, exploration support, mineral processing, environmental consultancy and mining technology.
The minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Faruk Yabo, said that the programme would equip young graduates with practical skills for careers in the mining and geosciences sectors.
He described the programme as an investment in the human capital needed to unlock Nigeria’s mineral resources and drive economic diversification, industrialisation and job creation.
While noting that the initiative was timely, Alake stressed that it would translate into national prosperity when supported by competent professionals.
He lauded the NGSA Director-General and management team for the initiative, stressing that the project would create reliable geological information, responsible investment and modern technology.
The minister pointed out that some of the major resources in the country are currently at some commercial quantities, including gold, lithium, iron ore, barite, limestone, lead-zinc, and bitumen.
According to him, these resources have prospects for creating job opportunities, economic diversification possibilities, industrialisation, and increased revenue.
