Hydrogen strengthens CSR with voluntary blood donation campaign

By Kehinde Ibrahim, Lagos

HYDROGEN Payment Services Company Limited has intensified its corporate social responsibility initiatives with a voluntary blood donation campaign designed to support healthcare delivery in Lagos and help boost the state’s blood reserves for emergency medical needs.

The initiative, organised in collaboration with the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, LSBTS, and Gbagada General Hospital, saw employees of the payments infrastructure company donate blood to assist patients requiring urgent medical attention. The exercise reflects the company’s commitment to promoting community welfare while encouraging employee participation in life-saving humanitarian activities.

The campaign formed part of activities commemorating this year’s World Blood Donor Day, themed “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.” It is expected to contribute significantly to healthcare services by providing blood for emergency treatments, surgical procedures, maternal healthcare, sickle cell patients and victims of road traffic accidents and other medical emergencies.

Medical professionals from the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service and Gbagada General Hospital supervised the exercise, ensuring that all donations met established medical standards. They also conducted awareness sessions highlighting the importance of regular voluntary blood donation, while addressing common misconceptions that often discourage potential donors.

The health experts stressed that voluntary blood donation remains one of the safest and most reliable ways of maintaining adequate blood supplies for hospitals, noting that a consistent pool of donors is essential to meeting the growing demand for blood across healthcare facilities in the state.

Senior Medical Practitioner with the Lagos State Government, Dr. Folashade Tawak, commended Hydrogen for engaging its workforce in a programme that directly supports public healthcare and saves lives.

According to her, voluntary blood donation is one of the most impactful ways individuals can contribute to society, adding that corporate initiatives such as Hydrogen’s play an important role in sustaining blood reserves for patients facing life-threatening medical conditions.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Hydrogen, Fiyinfoluwa Olorunsola, said the company views social impact as an integral part of its corporate mission, noting that its responsibilities extend beyond providing payment infrastructure services.

She explained that the blood donation campaign demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to improving lives within the communities where it operates, while fostering a workplace culture built on compassion, purpose and service.

Olorunsola added that bringing employees together for humanitarian causes reinforces the company’s values and creates opportunities for staff to make meaningful contributions beyond their professional responsibilities.

The company’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Obinna Ojekwe, said the initiative reflects Hydrogen’s people-focused approach to corporate responsibility and community engagement.

He noted that while the company facilitates the seamless movement of financial value through its payment infrastructure, the blood donation campaign offered employees an opportunity to contribute something even more personal by helping save lives.

According to him, the exercise demonstrates that businesses can combine commercial success with meaningful social impact through initiatives that address critical societal needs.

Hydrogen said the blood donation exercise is one of several activities planned under its 2026 employee volunteering and CSR programme, with additional community development initiatives scheduled throughout the year.

The company said its long-term CSR strategy is focused on creating sustainable value by encouraging employees to participate actively in projects that improve lives and strengthen communities beyond the financial services industry.

Hydrogen Payment Services Company Limited provides payment infrastructure solutions that enable financial institutions and large organisations across Africa to process, move and settle payments securely and efficiently, supporting seamless financial transactions across the continent.
