NAFDAC Warns of Fake Colgate Toothpaste Found in Kaduna Market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public to the presence of unregistered and suspected counterfeit versions of Colgate toothpaste circulating in the market.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a complaint about the products being sold in Kaduna, which triggered an immediate investigation.

NAFDAC officials reportedly visited the outlet linked to the complaint and discovered two suspicious products labeled “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g.” According to the agency, the shop owner claimed the items were purchased from a door-to-door vendor but failed to provide any proof of purchase.

The agency emphasized that the products have not undergone the required regulatory checks or quality assurance processes, warning that they may pose serious health risks to consumers. It confirmed that the items have since been removed from circulation, while efforts are ongoing to trace and identify those responsible for their distribution.

Further details revealed that the affected products, including “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g,” do not carry batch numbers or NAFDAC registration numbers. The labels indicate they were manufactured by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd., based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with production dates listed as August 2025 and expiry dates of August 2029.

NAFDAC has directed all its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance nationwide and ensure the removal of any counterfeit products found in circulation.

The agency also advised distributors, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant by checking product authenticity and physical condition before purchase or use. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

Healthcare professionals and patients have also been urged to report any adverse reactions linked to these products through NAFDAC’s official reporting channels, including its website and the Med-Safety mobile app.
