NCDC raises Ebola alert, orders states to activate emergency preparedness measures

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a nationwide public health advisory to Commissioners for Health across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urging immediate activation of preparedness measures over the ongoing regional outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

Although no confirmed case linked to the outbreak has been recorded in Nigeria, the agency warned that all states must strengthen surveillance and emergency response systems to prevent possible importation and transmission of the deadly virus.

In a statement circulated by NCDC Communications, the agency directed states to intensify readiness activities aimed at ensuring early detection, rapid response, infection prevention and control, laboratory preparedness, and the protection of healthcare workers.

The advisory highlighted the current regional outbreak situation and risk assessment, while also outlining preparedness expectations for states and the FCT.

According to the NCDC, states have been stratified based on their risk of importation and transmission, with specific actions recommended to strengthen coordination, surveillance, case management, infection prevention and control measures, as well as public communication.

The agency stressed the need for heightened vigilance at all levels of the healthcare system, noting that preparedness remains critical despite the absence of confirmed cases in the country.

“NCDC continues to work closely with states and partners to strengthen national preparedness and protect Nigerians from potential importation and onward transmission of Ebola Virus Disease,” the statement said.

The public health agency further urged state authorities to immediately implement the outlined measures to safeguard public health and ensure rapid containment in the event of any suspected case.
