SDP positions itself as stable alternative ahead of 2027

As Nigeria’s political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has described itself as the most stable and organised alternative amid the internal crises rocking several major parties.

The SDP leadership emphasised its focus on discipline, constitutional governance, and issue-based politics, contrasting its unity with the factional disputes, court cases, and leadership struggles affecting parties like the APC, PDP, ADC, and NDC.

Observers note that while controversies and power struggles dominate the political space, the SDP has largely avoided such disputes, concentrating instead on strengthening its internal structures.

Recently, the party conducted its presidential primary in Bauchi, where delegates unanimously endorsed Adewole Adebayo as its candidate for 2027. Party leaders hailed the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and fully compliant with electoral guidelines—unlike the litigation-prone primaries of other parties.

Adebayo outlined the SDP’s campaign priorities, stressing the need to strengthen institutions, promote accountability, and ensure government policies directly improve citizens’ lives. He argued that Nigeria’s resources should benefit all citizens, not just a privileged few, and called for greater respect for democratic institutions and strict adherence to the Constitution.

The party has proposed programmes aimed at creating jobs, improving infrastructure, expanding access to quality education, and strengthening the healthcare system. These policies, it said, reflect the belief that government has a responsibility to provide basic services and opportunities for citizens.

While analysts acknowledge that the SDP remains smaller compared to the APC and PDP, they argue that its message of stability and discipline could resonate with voters seeking an alternative. However, challenges such as limited financial resources and the dominance of larger parties remain significant hurdles.

Despite these obstacles, SDP National Chairman Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe reaffirmed the party’s determination to provide Nigerians with a credible platform capable of addressing national challenges and offering a fresh direction ahead of 2027.
